A TOP-CLASS social security system topped the wish list for one of the first people to express their views in a new poll of the elderly yesterday.

About 100 aged people took part in the Hong Kong Council of Social Service project, which was launched at its Wan Chai centre and is said to be the first of its kind in Asia.

About 50,000 more are expected to join in at social and multi-service centres across the territory by the October 29 closing date.

Participants are being asked to mark a cross next to a picture indicating whether social security, transport, health care or housing is their greatest concern.

Among the first to take part was 75-year-old grandmother of 10 and representative of the Hong Kong Christian Service's elderly council, Chow Man, who said social security was her choice as top priority.

''Better social security is an economic means by which the elderly can purchase other things such as health care, housing and transport,'' she said. ''I hope the Government will listen to the voice of the elderly. We will keep trying until it does.'' Ms Chow said the basic old-age allowance of $510 a month for people aged 65 and above should be raised to $650.
