Media and satellite-television operator eSun Holdings added to the Macau frenzy yesterday by revealing plans to build two hotels as part of its $2 billion television city development in the former Portuguese enclave. The announcement drew investors to eSun's stock as well as that of other firms in the Lai Sun group. After hitting $1.58, eSun shares closed up 60.82 per cent at $1.56 while Lai Sun Development leapt 20.56 per cent to 17 cents, Lai Fung Holdings rose 6.55 per cent to 26 cents and Lai Sun Garment International added 8.97 per cent to 42.5 cents. Taking advantage of the surge in interest in the special administrative region, eSun executive director Mark Lee Po-on said the company would seek Macanese government approval to alter the plans for its East Television City project. Under the original scheme, the development on reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane islands in an area known as Cotai included production studios, location and post-production facilities, tourist attractions, restaurants, shops and a small portion of residential space. It was estimated that 300,000 tourists would visit the complex each year. Two months ago, eSun announced its intention to raise the proportion of the 1.5 million square foot site set aside for residential development to as much as 70 per cent from between 20 per cent and 30 per cent. But at yesterday's annual general meeting, Mr Lee said the design had been revised again to include two hotels, each with 1,000 rooms, and a residential development of 30 houses. The television city project would take up about 800,000 sq ft. The redesign will be submitted to the Macanese government within the next two months. Mr Lee said eSun would seek an international operator to manage the hotels. Lai Sun Development will be the project manager of the development while Lai Fung will be responsible for the construction of the 30 houses. Meanwhile, Lai Sun Development plans to sell 60 detached houses in Rolling Hills Phase Two in Yuen Long early next year. The selling price of a 2,500 sqft house will be about $4,000 per square foot.
