If traces of the festive season linger on your handmade rug, head to carpet specialists CarpetBuyer (G/F, Horizon Plaza, 2 Lee Wing Street, Ap Lei Chau, tel: 2850 5508; www.carpetbuyer.com) for one of its new rug-cleaning kits. The kit comes in a box, which doubles as a measuring cup for water, and comprises a brush and pH neutral soap, imported from America, which helps to prevent the colours running.

'The real value is the special soap, which is designed to be left in the rug without leaving any residue,' explains shop owner Steve Knight. All you have to do is mix the soap with water and cover the carpet with the resulting foam, one square foot at a time. It doesn't need to be rinsed off, but the rug has to be left to dry in an air-conditioned room for 12 to 24 hours.
'Soap and water sounds simple but this is the best method and the same process that a professional would use,' says Knight. 'Steam cleaning isn't recommended because it damages the wool by removing its natural oils.' Having a rug professionally cleaned costs about $3,000; the CarpetBuyer kit costs $199.
