Lam Woon-kwong's successor must not be let back in civil service, legislators say
Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa has been warned not to bend the rules when choosing a civil servant to succeed his top aide, Lam Woon-kwong, who resigned last week.
Leading political parties said Mr Lam's successor as director of the chief executive's office would be taking a political appointment and should sever ties with the civil service for good.
The Democrats even threatened to block funding for the chief executive's office in the forthcoming budget if Mr Tung gives Mr Lam's successor the option of returning to the civil service.
Mr Lam resigned last Thursday after Sudden Weekly printed photographs of him at a Tokyo hotel with barrister Po Wing-kay.
His post was created in 2002 as a political appointment under the ministerial system.
