The station handled 1.95 million in the same period last year.

Zhu Haibin , director of the station's party office, said the annual holiday rush would peak on February 4, 5 and 6, with the number of daily trips expected to reach 280,000, compared with 196,000 last year.

Mr Zhu said the problem of the station's limited capacity would only be eased in 2008 when a new station in Panyu would be ready to handle inter-city trips.

At peak periods during the 40-day holiday travel period, 19 trains are expected to depart and arrive every hour.
