SKH Holy Trinity Church Secondary School held its 22nd speech day and  awards ceremony on December 4, with  Chan Yuk-shee - vice-president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology - as the guest- of-honour.

It was a memorable occasion. After the graduates received their awards and certificates, Professor Chan reminded them in his address to follow their interests  when choosing their careers or studies, citing  his son as an example.

Principal Wu Man-ming  congratulated graduates for their achievements.

He said that the school was at a disadvantage in recruiting Secondary One students, but  had been officially recognised as having value-added status. He thanked his colleagues for their efforts.

Emotions ran high when  teachers and staff went up on the stage to receive their long-service awards.

Joey Mak of 5A was named Student of the Year and the vote of thanks was delivered by graduate Amanda Lee of 6S.

The ceremony ended with a hip-hop dance and a performance by the school choir.

Sha Tin Pui Ying College held its sports day on December 3 and 6 at Sha Tin Sport Ground.

At the opening ceremony,  students and teachers sang the school song and prayed. Afterwards,   prefects, student helpers and teachers prepared for the races. All the races were exciting, especially the 100-metre, 4 x 400m and 4 x 100m.  Fewer records were broken this year compared to  last year.

We also had a cheering team competition. The cheering teams of the three houses were dressed in special  outfits. They sang, shouted slogans and danced.

Prizes were presented at the closing ceremony. The champion  cheering team title went to Red-White House and the second runner-up was the Blue-White House. The Form Three Wing House was named the school's overall champions  after winning the most races.

Rosaryhill School's parents, teachers and students heard a speech

by Cheng Kai-ming, chair of education and senior adviser to the vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, at the annual  awards ceremony on December 4 in the school hall. The ceremony started with a prayer led by Father Vicente Sanchez.

This  was followed by the principal's address and  an inspiring speech by Professor Cheng on the change  of duties of a responsible student.

He said that because the economy was changing rapidly,  the community needed to put more effort  into striving for an all-round education,  including taking part in extra-curricular activities.

He encouraged  students to participate  in more activities as it will help them become a good leader.

After a brief ceremony in which Professor Cheng distributed prizes, 16 teachers who had taught for 10, 20 or 30 years were awarded with long service awards.

A  spectacular musical performance was staged by  students (pictured above).  They performed the famous folk  tale Ashputtel. The trilingual performance was  a joint effort by the school choir,  school orchestra, the Chinese and English Departments and the Chinese Drama club.

After the show, Professor Cheng and the audience  helped themselves to refreshments (sweet and savoury pastries and tasty tidbits)  prepared by  senior home economics students.

'Toes a-tapping, hands  a-clapping' was the order of the day at CCC Kei San Secondary School's recent Australian Bush Dance (traditional country dancing) where three  New Territories schools took part in a  foray into Australian culture.

More than 80 students were introduced to the intricacies of 'strip the willow' and the 'hokey pokey', among other dances.

Although initially hesitant, particularly when asked to pair up with a student of the opposite  gender, the students - from Forms One to Four - responded enthusiastically to the instructions of NET Helen Davidson.

Fellow NETs Debbie Ison, Dawn Dunstan, Mary Perkins and Dor Arie demonstrated the dances.

Ms Perkins explained the use of the traditional Australian hat with dangling corks (used to keep the flies away) much to the amusement of  students (pictured left). Form Five students   made the hats especially for the dance.

Exhausted but happy students took home not only prizes but an experience of western culture that was new to them.

'I didn't think it would be so much fun,' said one student.

Another Form One girl admitted that the boys  looked a bit scary but were not too bad even though 'we had to hold their hands for the dance'.
