There are many ways to cheer up someone who might be depressed - taking them out for dinner, perhaps marathon heart-to-heart phone conversations. But one thing you probably haven't tried is designing the friend a personal T-shirt.

The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong are holding a 'My Heart, Your Soul' T-shirt design competition this month to promote emotional health and combat the city's suicide problem. In 2003, 17 out of every 100,000 people in Hong Kong committed suicide.

The contest is open only to secondary school students. They should submit designs - no bigger than an A4-sized paper and in four colours or fewer - to the organisation by Thursday. Both hand-drawn and computer-generated graphics will be accepted. Winners will be contacted early next month and their designs will be printed on T-shirts to be sold for charity.

Registration forms can be downloaded from www.sbhk.org.hk. Call Ms Lau on 2319 1277, extension 202, for more details.
