Vivienne Chow

The actors Tony Leung Chiu-wai  and Zhang Ziyi  won the hearts of critics with their performances in Wong Kar-wai's  2046 at the 11th Hong Kong Film Critics' Society Awards.

Leung  and Zhang  were named as best actor and best actress in the society's annual awards, which were announced yesterday.

Organisers said that despite Leung  reprising  the role of Chow Mo-wan  from In The Mood For Love, he showed the progression of a romantic idealist into a playboy tortured by love.

Zhang  also shone in the film, with her complex emotions concealed in  provocative body language.

For the first time, the society's coveted award for best film went to an animation,  McDull, Prince de la Bun.

Organisers praised the animation's creativity and  insight into issues of Hongkongers' cultural identity.

Alice Mak Ka-bik,  creator of the iconic cartoon  pig, said she was surprised to win.

She said the recognition would provide  a welcome boost to  local animation.

'It's a great encouragement for local animation production,' she said.

Mak is planning two new McDull films for this year, including the kung fu tale McDull Wu Dang.

'Now technology enables us local animators to bring more variety to films, from animation to computer-generated productions,' she said.

'What was impossible is now all possible.'

Derek Yee Tung-shing  was named  best director for  One Nite in Mongkok.

Gordon Chan Ka-sheung  and Rico Chung Kai-cheong's  screenplay for A1 took the best script award.

Organisers said that the script was a sincere reflection of humanity and of modern Hong Kong society.

Nine of last year's local films received awards of merit.

They are Dumplings - Three ... Extremes,  One Nite in Mongkok, Throw Down, Kung Fu Hustle, A1, Colour Blossoms, 2046, Breaking News and Love Battlefield.

The  Film Critics' Society Awards ceremony will be held at the end of next month at the Hong Kong Film Archive.
