Job seekers can look forward to brighter prospects this year, with the government recording a 50 per cent rise in vacancies since the start of this month, a labour official said yesterday.
Permanent Secretary for Labour Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said the Labour Department had received notice of an average of 1,077 job vacancies per day since the start of the year.
This amounted to 11,850 vacant positions by January 15 and equated to a 54 per cent rise over the same period last year.
Most of the full-time vacancies were in business services, catering and the retail industry.
'Looking ahead, as business activity and labour market sentiment are likely to stay buoyant during the run-up to the Lunar New Year, labour demand is expected to be sustained in the near term,' Mr Cheung said.
