Grill seeker

David Evans

In a city with a wealth of international cuisine on our doorsteps, it's hard to imagine travelling more than 30 minutes for a steak dinner. But for those with a taste for adventure and good food in an atmosphere that is cosy and familiar, the Gallery, at 26 Tong Fuk, South Lantau, is bar and grill heaven. A short taxi ride from Tung Chung MTR station or Mui Wo ferry pier, the Gallery serves first-rate wines and draught beers,

Middle Eastern-influenced appetisers and choice cuts of meat and fish grilled on the patio barbecue.

Its Mediterranean-style bar offers a sanctuary from the heat or chill, depending on the time of year, while the green oasis of the patio makes for a relaxing meal or drink. What the Gallery lacks in sea view compared with its more famous counterpart on Cheung Sha Beach, it more than makes up for in accessibility, food quality and atmosphere. The abundance of reasonably priced holiday villas dotted throughout the village also makes Tong Fuk an ideal weekend refuge for the city-weary. So why not be an adventurer this week and head out to the real alfresco.
