A challenging multi-sport race for youngsters has attracted lucrative sponsorship, with participants being able to use the modern facilities at Hong Kong International School (HKIS) in Tai Tam. The Bonaqua Youth Adventure Race, scheduled for April 16, will be organised by Keith Noyes, one of Hong Kong's most respected adventure-course designers, who has been responsible for the high-profile AXN Challenge and other major outdoor events in mainland China and around the region. Hosted by HKIS, the race - for those aged 11 to 18 - will take place in the countryside around Tai Tam. HKIS, with the help of Noyes, has secured quality prizes through the support of sponsors such as McDonald's, Powerbar and Salomon. Outdoor racing equipment and trophies will be up for grabs in three age groups - 11-13, 14-16 and 17-18. There are places available for a total of 100 two-member teams. Registration, which is open until March 1, costs $200 per participant. Like last December's Bonaqua Youth Challenge near Sai Kung, the race will feature a variety of demanding land- and water-based activities. 'Race disciplines will include trail running, abseiling, rock scrambling, kayaking, swimming, map reading and some mystery tests designed to promote teamwork,' said Noyes. The use of facilities at HKIS will make the race exciting as well as safe. A free training session will be provided at HKIS on April 9, when basic abseiling, map-reading and kayaking skills will be taught. 'Paula Lepore of HKIS has been the driving force in securing their wonderful facilities. And with the help of their talented faculty, we can teach and promote adventure-racing skills to the youth of Hong Kong,' said Noyes. An adventure racer herself, Lapore wanted to help organise a race for students. 'I was determined to find sponsorship for a youth adventure race,' said Lapore. 'We would like to have students from various schools participate in the race.' Registration forms are available at www.seyonasia.com . Further details with regard to required equipment and the race itinerary will be posted on the website at a later date.
