DAB lawmaker Choy So-yuk offers a leadership lesson

In a rare attack on the chief executive, DAB legislator Choy So-yuk yesterday questioned whether Tung Chee-hwa would really learn from his mistakes and do a better job - and suggested that he take a lesson in leadership from author George Orwell.

She said Mr Tung had yet to demonstrate a firm grasp of the basics of politics and governance.

'Mr Tung appears to have a habit of swinging from one extreme to another, from inaction and indecision to hyper-action and overreaction, and then from hyper-action and overreaction to inaction and indecision,' she said.

Her attack contrasted to the general pro-government stance of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong. Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, Ms Choy said: 'George Orwell says, the secret of rulership is to combine a belief in one's infallibility with the power to learn from past mistakes.'

But she doubted if public confession was the right course. 'Using the policy address to admit mistakes and convince the public he has the power to learn from mistakes' would make public expectations harder to manage, she said.
