A new Bachelor of Arts degree course offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will help nurture more professional designers for the intimate apparel industry.
The 18-month, full-time programme is the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. It covers a range of subjects on the design, operation and production of intimate apparel. A three-year part-time course will also be available.
In addition to the compulsory and elective subjects, students will be placed on a seven-week study trip or industrial placement in Hong Kong, the mainland or overseas during summer.
Winnie Yu Wing-man, programme leader and associate professor at PolyU's Institute of Textiles and Clothing, said the institute introduced the course in response to requests by the industry.
'The industry has complained about a shortage of professionally trained lingerie designers,' Dr Yu said.
'Most of the designers [in the market] have only received on-the-job training. As there is a huge demand for high-quality intimate apparel, we need more professionals.'
Candidates who wish to join the programme should have a higher diploma in fashion and textiles, specialising in fashion and clothing, and have at least six months' post-qualification experience in the industry.
