Communists in Singapore threw four grenades at three police stations in a well-planned attack 'on the forces of law and order' to celebrate the founding of a communist militant organisation, the Malay People's Liberation Army, on February 1, 1949.
Three of the grenades exploded, injuring 18 people, including three civilians.
A police officer said the unexploded grenade had been identified as one stolen from a government weapons depot the previous year.
Europe's worst cold wave of the 20th century pushed its toll to nearly 100 lives.
Property damage ran into millions of dollars, and forecasters said little relief could be expected for the next few days. From Turkey to Britain, from Scandinavia to the shores of Morocco, millions shivered.
