Frank Hsieh vows to make consultations a cornerstone
New Taiwanese Premier Frank Hsieh Chang-ting vowed yesterday to seek reconciliation with the opposition after he was sworn in as head of a modestly reshuffled cabinet.
'The new cabinet must be humble because the ruling Democratic Progressive Party is not the majority in the legislature, although it is the largest party in the lawmaking body,' said Mr Hsieh, who was appointed by President Chen Shui-bian.
Mr Hsieh said he would make consultations and co-existence the cornerstones of his premiership.
The government needed to seek consultations with the opposition in order to ensure co-existence, he said, adding it was the government's duty to ensure stability in Taiwan.
He said it took more time to achieve reconciliation than provocation, but as long as he was in office, he would do all he could to achieve the goal of making peace with the opposition.
