Sorting out synonyms

Did you know that Monaco is a small country tucked away between Italy and France? It is a small place where lots of rich and famous people live.

That is not a very well-written opening to an article about Monaco because the writer has used the adjective 'small' twice in the first two sentences.

When you are writing something that you want someone else to read with interest, it is boring to repeat a key word in two sentences next to each other. This is where synonyms come in handy.

They are handy ... let me change that ... they are useful when you

want to add variety to your writing. 'Handy' and 'useful' are good examples of a synonym. They are two words that mean the same thing. Synonyms are words with similar meaning.
