Taxi driver Lau Kwai-loy yesterday rejected a US$1,000 reward after he returned US$100,000 to some absent-minded visitors who left the cash in a rucksack in his cab.

He made it to a police station with the money at 3.45pm - shortly before a wanted notice was to be circulated to police to look for him. Mr Lau said he had never thought of keeping the money and did not want to be viewed as a hero for returning it.

'My taxi licence is worth much more than $1 million. Why would I have to be so greedy for this money?' said Mr Lau, who has been a taxi driver for 17 years.

His act of honesty happened yesterday afternoon after American visitor Eli Levy, his wife and business partners got out of Mr Lau's car near Exchange Square in Central, leaving the bag of cash behind.

Trying to trace Mr Lau from information printed on a fare receipt and the driver's name shown inside the taxi, they reported the case to Central police station.

At the time, Mr Lau was driving towards Western, unaware he had the huge sum of cash until a family of four got in his cab and noticed the rucksack.
