The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) has announced a variety of programmes to meet the growing demand for professional education in Liberal Studies in its 2005-2006 academic year.

They are designed to respond to the  need for teachers to prepare ahead of the introduction of Liberal Studies as a core subject, to be implemented as early as 2008 under the reformed educational system, or 3+3+4, referring to three years in junior secondary school, three years in high school and four years in university.

Among the newly introduced programmes is a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Liberal Studies Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy), or PGDE-LSSKP, to be launched this September.

The 30-credit programme features modules in three categories: subject knowledge, pedagogy and practicum.

The six subject knowledge modules, which  include self and personal development, society and culture, and science, technology and environment, aim  to suit the wide needs of candidates  coming from different disciplines.

These components will be adjusted  to the new Liberal Studies curriculum once it is finalised by the Education and Manpower Bureau.

Professor Edward Chen Kwan-yiu, president of Lingnan University which will offer some of the subject knowledge modules, is  confident about the programme.

'For years Lingnan University has been promoting liberal arts education, the importance of which is now widely recognised,' he said.

'I am  delighted that our strength in this area can be usefully applied in the  PGDE programme with the HKIEd. I believe prospective students will be able to benefit by enjoying the best of both worlds in Liberal Studies subject knowledge and pedagogy.'

The two-year part-time programme is targeted at secondary teachers who have their first degrees or holders of recognised  teaching qualifications on top of a bachelor's degree.

Professor Bernard Luk Hung-kay, vice-president (academic) of HKIEd said the institute was actively planning other new programmes of different modes and durations to suit the needs of teachers who plan to teach Liberal Studies.
