WILLIAM Hurt and his estranged wife, Heidi Henderson, daughter of conductor Skitch Henderson, are in the process of an acrimonious divorce that is hung up on an unusual pre-nuptial agreement concerning their proclivities to drugs and alcohol.

Henderson reportedly signed a pre-nuptial agreement that ties compensation formulas in case of a divorce to staying clean of their one-time addictions.

The arrangement calls for Henderson to receive a lump sum payment of US$250,000 (HK$1.93 million), plus US$50,000 a year for two years and support payments of US$24,000 a year for the couple's two children, Samuel, four, and William, three.

But the lump sum arrangement could be halved if Henderson was found to be using ''mood-altering drugs''. Hurt must pay 50 per cent more if he falters.

Henderson is challenging the agreement.

Meanwhile, Hurt, 43, and new girlfriend Sandrine Bonnaire are expecting their first child in December.
