Jewellers exhibiting their expensive wares during the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show next month can look forward to a sizeable police presence - and the inevitable thieves.

Hong Kong Jewellery Manufacturers' Association chairman Aaron Shum Wan-leung put on a brave face yesterday as he predicted thieves would strike again this year.

'Well, it wouldn't be very good news if no one wanted to steal anything from us because that would mean our products are not of high quality,' Mr Shum said.

Several hundred police are expected at the four-day show next month, although many will be working undercover.

The fair, organised by the Trade Development Council, has always been a prime and profitable target for thieves.

Last year's event opened with four thefts involving about $1 million in goods and cash being reported. A year earlier, more than $16 million worth of diamonds were stolen, also on the first day of the fair.
