The final chapter

The release of Beyond: The Ultimate Story marks the final chapter of Hong Kong's most successful rock outfit that disbanded following six sell-out concerts earlier this month.

Comprising three CDs of 50 songs and a DVD of Beyond Live 1991, the album commemorates a rock 'n' roll fairy tale that spans over two decades: the underground outfit that rose to stardom in the 1980s, survived the death of their lead singer Koma Wong in the 90s, and finally decided to bow out of the industry after 22 years.

From their earlier work such as Forever Waiting to the award-winning theme song of Infernal Affairs II, the music of Beyond speaks passionately about things that all young people can relate to: faith in one's dreams, yearning for love and the hope for a better world.

In addition to their teen-angst songs such as the brilliant I Am Angry, Beyond is most well-known for their uplifting pieces such as Farewell To Dreams and Midnight Blues.

The band was also among the pioneers who wrote songs about China. The Land and The Great Wall - originally released years ago - now sound like prophecies of the current cultural changes on the mainland.

Love them or hate them, Beyond is more than just a rock band - they are a symbol of the courage of young people chasing their dreams.
