Premier Wen Jiabao will seek to enhance the government's macroeconomic control measures in his work report to the annual National People's Congress meeting scheduled to open on March 5. Reporting on a Politburo meeting chaired by President Hu Jintao yesterday to discuss the work report, China Central Television said the meeting affirmed the need to strengthen and improve the measures, and to implement a prudent fiscal and currency policy. '[We should] further remove unstable and unhealthy factors in the economy in order to maintain steady and relatively fast economic growth,' according to the report, to be vetted by the 10-day plenum. The government also needed to upgrade the economic structure by promoting the use of technology and more efficient use of energy and resources. More co-ordinated development between China's main economic regions should be promoted. The government should also support the development of the private sector, speed up reforms of the financial sector, and pursue taxation reforms. Regarding the agricultural sector, the top decision-making body highlighted the need to improve production efficiency, raise agricultural production and boost farmers' income. Another topic mentioned at the meeting was social stability and there were calls for extra efforts to improve the lives of those living in poverty. '[We should] improve the employment situation, as well as strengthen social security,' it said.
