There's always one. Despite the reminder at the beginning of Tuesday's show that mobile phones should be switched off, one inevitably sounded during the silence between two numbers.

Seated at the piano, Brad Mehldau waited it out before playing a couple of bars of the ring-tone tune, raising a laugh and defusing the sense of collective embarrassment.

It was the only moment of levity in an otherwise serious, but hugely enjoyable, performance by one of the finest jazz trios in the world.
