A lovers' meeting turned into a nightmare when three robbers attacked them in Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai, tying them up and stealing $17,000 from the woman's bank accounts.

The ordeal began about 4.30am yesterday when the three men, speaking Cantonese with mainland accents, attacked the couple from behind. The man, 28, fought back but was tied up with his 27-year-old girlfriend.

'The two victims were ordered to surrender their property and reveal the PIN numbers of their bank cards,' a police spokeswoman said.

They handed over $500, two mobile phones, a digital camera and some bank cards.

One man left with the cards while the other suspects guarded the victims. When the man with the cards could not withdraw money, he phoned his accomplices.

Leaving the blindfolded boyfriend, who was bound hand and foot with wires to a seat in the Wan Chai square, they took the woman by taxi to an ATM in Great George Street, Causeway Bay, where they forced her to withdraw the money.
