At least four people died in a fire that gutted a high-rise commercial centre in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung yesterday.
Nine survivors were plucked to safety from the roof by helicopter, police said.
Three other people were injured in the blaze.
Fire broke out in the 23-storey Golden Complex, a Taichung landmark and the seventh tallest building in Taiwan, in the late afternoon. More than 100 firemen fought the blaze for three hours.
Television footage showed hundreds of people fleeing into the street in panic, with a girl from a supplementary school crying that a number of her classmates and teachers were still trapped in the building.
But police said the students and teachers were all safely evacuated, along with most other people in the building.
