Local leaders do their bit as world enacts treaty on tobacco control
Lawmakers, government officials and representatives from the health and education sectors yesterday pledged to promote a smoke-free community to mark the enactment of the first international treaty on tobacco control.
The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, of which China is a signatory, came into force yesterday.
The World Health Organisation treaty seeks to reduce the health and economic impact of smoking.
It calls for people to be protected from exposure to tobacco smoke in the workplace, on public transport and in indoor public places, and for bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
In Chater Garden yesterday, representatives from different sectors read out a pledge to be non-smokers and not to pass on tobacco smoking to the next generation.
