When Paul Rath said his company, storage switch-maker McData, had set 'aggressive growth targets' for China and the rest of the region, he meant he attended to the matter personally.

Mr Rath is vice-president and general manager, McData, Asia-Pacific and Japan.

'I have a big map of China and all its 30-odd provinces in my bedroom,' Mr Rath said, noting that the mainland was the company's fastest-growing market in the region. The map is dotted with red markers, as if to prove his point.

It is more than two years since McData, a Colorado-based company spun off from storage systems giant EMC, established its first mainland office in Beijing, and, according to Mr Rath, the company is 'executing better in the field'.

'We grew 100 per cent last year, and we are aiming for at least 60 per cent growth this year,' he said. 'We are also shooting for 40 per cent overall growth in the Asia-Pacific [region] and Japan.'

Growth has been mainly attributed to the company's large accounts in the mainland's financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing and government sectors, which deployed storage area networks (SANs) based on its storage switches. These large organisations are in the process of consolidating the repositories of their information, which should cut their operating costs and allow for a more efficient use of their data centres.
