Name: Tse Yin-ping

School: Diocesan Girls' School

Sports: Athletics and badminton

Achievements: Yin-ping, a Watsons Athletic Club (WAC) member, won  the girls' Grade C 1,500-metre final at the Hong Kong and Kowloon District Division One athletic meet last week. She achieved her personal best of 5 minutes, 7 seconds.

At the Watsons Elite Junior Championships in January, the 13-year-old Sai Kung resident won the Grade C 1,500m and helped her  team win the 4x400m relay. She was a champion at the Division One inter-school cross-country race  and placed second in the Jing Ying cross-country event. Yin-ping represented Hong Kong in the inter-port cross-country race, finishing sixth and helping her team win the title.

She also plays  badminton and trains four times a week with a club team and the Hong Kong Potential Squad.

Soundbite: 'I became more serious about athletics last summer when I discovered my potential in middle- and long-distance running. I like the excitement of a race, and the sense of achievement that comes from training and winning.'

From her coach: 'Yin-ping has all the basic attributes to become a very strong runner,' said Leung Tat-wai, her coach at WAC.  'She is very enthusiastic and has a strong will to win. Even

if she loses a race, she  uses it as encouragement to try harder. After she lost an 800m race in January, she was very disappointed, but focused on doing well in the inter-school meet, where she won the 1,500m.'

Interests: Yin-ping says she focuses on her schoolwork during her free time.

Ambitions: She has set her sights on the 2009 East Asian Games. Another target is to break the Grade C inter-school 800m and 1,500m records next year.
