What the Golden Globes are to the Oscars, the Golden Bauhinia Awards are to the Hong Kong Film Awards - a closely watched indicator of possible results at our film industry's main event. Unlike the Golden Globes, the Golden Bauhinia Awards was a rather unglamorous affair. First, there was the location, the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kowloon Bay - which might be a good venue for trade fairs, but definitely not for a prestigious awards show. Then there was the scale. The small entrance in front of the hall was used as a combination red carpet, press zone, public relations counter and cocktail bar. Confusion ensued, with stars being ushered into the hall without a chance to sip cocktails, other guests retreating to the press room for a drink, and no one really knowing where they were supposed to be. At one point, CitySeen was mere inches from a lost best actor, Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Then again, aren't awards ceremonies supposed to be all about celebrating achievement rather than walking the red carpet?
