Top scores won't necessarily guarantee admission to the elite Peking and Qinghua universities. Apparently, karaoke skills are all important. Representatives of the two prestigious universities in Hong Kong this week on a recruitment drive asked some students to sing The Pearl of the Orient in Putonghua and to recite sentimental poems from the Tang dynasty. A Peking University examiner said he was most impressed. 'Most of them sang beautifully. Perhaps they had [karaoke] practice,' he told the Oriental Daily News. A total of 159 prospective students were interviewed, down 43 per cent from last year. The universities wouldn't speculate why fewer students applied this time. Enforced singing wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?
