With record crowds expected for Hong Kong's first Rugby Sevens World Cup, which kicks off on Friday, work is already well under way to prepare a feast of food and drink bigger than any in the tournament's history.

Twenty-four teams will battle it out over the weekend, with the 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium already sold out for all three days.

There has been six months of careful planning for the event, for which the official caterer will employ more than 1,200 workers. The menu includes 20,000 pies, 2,000kg of hot dogs, 4,000 sandwiches and 9,900 portions of ice-cream.

More importantly, 90,000 litres of beer will be pumped into the stadium to help eager fans make it all the way through to Sunday afternoon's final.

This will be supplemented by nearly 2,000 bottles of wine, 154 bottles of champagne, 8,800 litres of Pimm's and 13,000 litres of soft drink.

Altogether, it represents a 15 per cent increase on the amount of food and drink prepared for last year's event. There are also warehouses full of bread rolls, bananas, plums, potatoes, muesli bars, crisps, tortillas, peanuts, noodles, chickens and camembert cheese.
