John Size-trained Fashion Jewellery may have burned a few punters in his early days but has been a revelation since he stepped up in distance and can continue his march through the grades tonight by prevailing in a virtual last race match-up with First Among Equals. The two smart four-year-olds are receiving weight off from their major rivals and that will be enough to see them fight out the finish of Class Two event over the Sha Tin mile. Fashion Jewellery (Douglas Whyte) is classic case of a horse which has reverted to his breeding and employed more productively that keen speed he had shown so often in his early career. It was that sheer ability which saw the gelding start favourite at three of his first four runs over short courses, managing just one placing. He started under 10-1 in his first 10 outings for only one win. But since Size moved him up to the Sha Tin mile at his last two starts, Fashion Jewellery has been a different horse with hollow wins each time and with a quick glance at his breeding no-one should be that surprised. By Entrepreneur, who hardly throws 1,000-metre horses, Fashion Jewellery's dam All Night Party has won three races in New Zealand at 1,400m, 1,900m and 2,000m. All Night Party is also a half sister to Mandalay Bay, an eight-time winner in moderate company but importantly all at distances from 1,500m to 1,850m. More notably she is also a half-sister to the outstanding Australian miler, Catalan Opening, who was a dual Group One winner at 1,600m and also the winner of Hong Kong's Invitation Bowl (1,400m) in 1997. Hoisted 12 points for his latest win on February 20, Fashion Jewellery looks right up to handling the rise to Class Two but he will encounter serious opposition from First Among Equals. Yet to win in six attempts at 1,600m, First Among Equals has nevertheless produced top efforts over the course including his terrific second to Green Treasure in November at level handicaps. While Green Treasure has taken his rating to over 100 and finished fifth in Sunday's Derby, First Among Equals has remained much lower, hampered by slow tempos and his suspect stamina when tried at longer than the mile. Dropping back to 1,600m, First Among Equals (Olivier Doleuze) will be better suited. While Fashion Jewellery and First Among Equals stand out, it would be impossible to deny Almond Lee Yee-tat's in-form Being Famous a chance. Five wins from his past six starts says it all for Being Famous whose heart is most definitely in the right place but the run surely cannot go on forever. Conceding nine and 10 pounds to Fashion Jewellery and First Among Equals could make him stretch tonight.
