Beer and cheer for Paddy's Day

It's 2pm and I've just woken Christy Sheridan, who appears to be nursing a monstrous hangover. He and the rest of Dublin band Celtic Fusion - Tony Brennan, Michael Smith and Tony Mellon - spent the previous night playing at Hong Kong's annual St Patrick's Ball.

After two hours of playing what their fans call 'traditional Irish music with a modern touch', the band had to recuperate. Such recuperation, evidently, involved the traditional Irish drinking that follows - and often as not accompanies - playing traditional Irish music.

'I'm sorry, I'm normally more coherent than this,' Sheridan croaks. 'I didn't get back this morning until half past six.' He struggles to remember their set list - but has no trouble naming the most requested song when they're abroad. 'Danny Boy,' he says. 'Which we'd never play at home. But it's very popular outside Ireland. We can also be expected to play Fields of Athenry.'

By all accounts, they rocked the house at the Grand Hyatt hotel on Saturday night. 'The dance floor was heaving,' says Harry O'Neill, president of the Irish Business Forum.

The band knows how to connect with its audience, he says, and this was particularly evident at the ball. O'Neill says he's one of many who want to see the band when they play tonight to celebrate St Patrick's Day at Delaney's in Wan Chai.

The pub's managing director, Noel Smyth, says it's easy to understand the band's appeal. 'They've played here before and they always put on a great show,' he says. 'We're very happy to have them back. They're musicians first and traditional artists second, so to the naked ear their sound is very good.'

Magistrate Ian Candy, a past president of the St Patrick's Society in Hong Kong, counts himself as a fan. 'They play a good mix. You get traditional Irish music with a modern flavour, but they do modern Irish songs, too. You may get the occasional Corrs cover.'
