STUDENT athletes will this weekend stake their claims for places on two Hong Kong teams for the ninth All-China Secondary School Games. The Games, which will feature the best young athletes from all cities and provinces in China, will be held in Zhengzhou , Hunan province , in mid-August. Coaches for the boys' and girls' table tennis squads and the boys' football team will run their eye over candidates who will attend trials at various venues tomorrow and Sunday. At Lai Chi Kok Sports Centre tomorrow, six boys and six girls will be chosen from a group of 52 table tennis hopefuls. At Shing Mun Valley Sports Ground on Saturday and Causeway Bay Sports Ground (next to the Hong Kong Central Library) on Sunday, 87 young footballers have signed up for a chance to join the training squad for the Games. Up to 25 players will qualify for a second round of trials on April 2. They will be joined by 30 pre-selected boys, mostly members of Hong Kong junior representative sides. A final training squad of 20 will be chosen after next month's trials.
