Australian captain Tim Clark hopes to follow in the footsteps of past and current Wallabies who have made the jump from sevens to XVs.

The halfback narrowly missed a place with the New South Wales Waratahs for this year's Super 12 competition and is eyeing a place in the new franchise in Perth next season.

But first he wants to strengthen his case and lead the Aussies in a successful campaign in Hong Kong.

'Australia has a long history of players who made an impact in sevens and then went on to play top-class XVs rugby,' said Clark, who plays his club rugby for Eastern Suburbs in Sydney.

Current Wallabies captain George Gregan, Joe Roff and Ben Tune played at the 1995 Hong Kong Sevens and went on to do great things in XVs, including winning the 1999 World Cup.

The Australian coach back in 1995 was Glen Ella, who has returned to lead the national sevens team for the World Cup Sevens and next year's Commonwealth Games.

'Glen played for Australia at sevens and also coached the team before. We've had some great sevens teams in the past and he was certainly part of it,' said Clark.
