Pets are good for children in many ways, but before you rush out to the pet shop, bear in mind the following:
Are you allowed to have pets in your building? It sounds obvious, but many animals are given up in Hong Kong at the insistence of landlords.
What parents think children want and what they actually want is often different? Some children imagine a pet will be a 'real' cuddly toy. Make sure your child understands that a pet has needs and desires.
Puppies and young children aren't always the best combination. A puppy can be a little like having another baby in the house. It not only needs constant attention and care, but has sharp teeth. Do you have the time and patience?
If you plan to get a dog, do your research. Some breeds are more suitable in terms of size and temperament. If in doubt, ask at your local veterinary surgery.
Think about the cost. A pure-breed dog can cost up to $20,000, plus as much as $2,000 a year on vets bills. A big dog costs about $400 a month to feed.
