Health officials yesterday ordered the recall of a herbal slimming product that could cause stomach cramps and excessive water loss.

The importer and wholesaler of Bioslim Herbal Tablets were told to recall all packages of the tablets because they contain bisacodyl, a laxative that requires registration under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance.

A Department of Health spokesman said the Swiss-made Bioslim had not been registered in Hong Kong. 'Bisacodyl can cause discomfort such as abdominal pain and cramps,' he said.

'Prolonged use or overdosing on it can lead to excessive loss of water and electrolytes ... because it is used as a stimulant laxative.

'Products containing bisacodyl are pharmaceutical products and must be registered before sale.'

People who have bought the tablets are advised to dispose of them, return them for a refund or give them to the Health Department.
