Artery disease and eczema respond to Chinese herbs

Felix Lo

Medical experts at Chinese University have hailed the success of two research projects using herbal remedies to treat artery disease and eczema.

Announcing the results yesterday, they said the finding showed the herbal formulas could be used to complement western medicine.

In one project, a combination of two Chinese herbs improved the function of arteries in patients suffering from atherosclerosis - thickening of the walls of the large and medium arteries.

In the other, a five-herb combination improved the condition of children suffering from the uncomfortable and unsightly skin disease eczema.

The results came as the university launched its Research Clinic for Integrated Medicine, to continue more than 30 similar projects in conjunction with doctors of western medicine.

Chinese University's professor of medicine and therapeutics, Woo Kam-sang, said that in the artery disease project, the combination of the herbs danshen and gegen had been 'extremely well tolerated' by patients who were also using western medicine.

The clinic will take over more than 30 projects from the clinical trial section of the university's Institute of Chinese Medicine.
