Designers envisage community hub in the heart of Wan Chai, an urban meeting place for lunch, relaxing and sport
The renowned British architect and designer invited to redevelop Wan Chai's Southorn Playground hope their plans will draw more people to the community site.
Architect Fred Manson and designer Thomas Heatherwick, who plan to meet the public at the playground from 2.30pm today, have visited Hong Kong four times in the past 12 months, describing it as 'an extraordinary place'. On each visit they walked around Wan Chai, talked to residents and explored what the neighbourhood needed.
The Wan Chai District Council has proposed redeveloping the old playground. The pair will have a completed design by July.
'It is already very much loved by residents and used by some people. But the land is not being used efficiently at the moment,' said Mr Heatherwick, pointing out the area is mostly used by men.
He said the playground was a valuable space for the whole city, rather than just within Wan Chai.
