Updated at 4.58pm: The Health Department is asking mainland health authorities for more information about a new, potentially deadly type of bronchitis ? which was recently detected in a Guangzhou hospital, the Ming Pao Daily reported on Wednesday. Guangzhou Municipal Paediatric Hospital has treated 10 patients suffering from the new type bronchitis since 2002. They were all children. Two were admitted this year, reported the Ming Pao Daily citing mainland media reports. Victims had developed a white, plastic-like growth in their respiratory tracts. This caused difficulties in breathing and could be potentially fatal. The cause of the disease has not been found, the mainland reports said. Chinese University of Hong Kong?s Department of Paediatrics associate professor Albert Martin Li said the new type of bronchitis was uncommon. It was usually found in victims with other illnesses, such as heart problems and kidney failure. Dr Li said victims would develop symptoms of severe pneumonia. But influenza or colds would not trigger the disease, local radio reported.
