Vivienne Tang

Hong Kong-based jewellery designer Michelle Ong Cheung is  fast becoming one of Hollywood's most sought-after jewellers.   Actresses including Jennifer Garner, Kate Winslet, Teri Hatcher and Glenn Close have  been spotted wearing  her diamond creations, and  she's  a favourite  with Hong Kong fashion followers.

Born in Hong Kong and educated in North America, Ong has  been in the business for  more than 10 years.  She's the creative force behind  Carnet,  which she established with her partner and gem dealer, Avi Nagar, with whom she's been working since 1985. Her  signature style uses eastern  and western  influences, matching them with sensual femininity. Ong also helps  raise funds for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society.

Have you always wanted to be a designer?

I have always been interested in artistic expression, but I became involved in the design process when  I found my perfect creative medium in jewellery.

How  was Carnet set up?

Carnet was launched in 1998. Avi Nagar and I are equal partners. We employ  about 30 people in  our office, workshop and  retail boutique. I'm  in charge  of the design and direction  of Carnet.  Avi  supports the versatility and range of my designs by finding the best-quality gems.

How many lines does your collection cover?

Most of Carnet's pieces are  one-of-a-kind items, but I  have  created a day range.   These pieces are signed and limited in  quantity.

What's your design philosophy and how is it reflected in the materials and shapes?

I view jewellery design  as an art form. I  combine  great jewels with contemporary glamour. The materials I use infuse a brilliance and life into my designs  that reflects the essence of the woman who wears  them. My designs fuse  fine workmanship with bold artistic statements. I believe in a fearless use of precious materials to create pieces that have both life and breath.

Who are your customers?

I have clients all over the world.  The woman who wears Carnet connects with the quality, unique character and artistic integrity of our creations. I  wear my designs myself. I only design pieces  I'd  be confident  wearing. My clients deserve no less.

What inspires you?

Many things  - a  gem, a Chinese antique, a beautiful  shape. Artistic expression is a function of who we are. I'm influenced by the east and west. My designs fuse  aspects of my environment, my cultural background and my aesthetic sense.

What else do you design?

I have introduced a line of limited-edition  timepieces.   I have also included men's cufflinks,  using jade and precious stones.

Where are your designs sold?

In Hong Kong, my designs are  exclusively available at the Carnet Boutique, Chater House, Shop 114, Central (tel: 2805 0113). In the US, they're available retail. However,  we provide pieces for  customers around the world through Hong Kong sales.

Where do you want to expand?

First, I must be sure that expansion doesn't  compromise our standards.  We recently participated as a jeweller of choice for  celebrities at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards in Hollywood. We were delighted at the  response from  the likes of  Winslet and  Close.  But  we will only expand if I'm satisfied that we can maintain our vision.

What about the future?

I'm firmly grounded in the  present. I hope to work hard, express my artistic vision and live with integrity, surrounded by family and friends. What more could one ask for?

Carpe diem (seize the day) because today is all that  we  hold in our hands.
