What is it? Dilshad Shroff runs meditation classes in Hong Kong, with a small weekly group at the New Age Shop. The idea is to balance a person's chakras - the Sanskrit word for moving wheel. Chakras run along the spinal column and can be damaged or blocked by emotional stress. Shroff says her classes aim to allow people to be centred at all times. 'When your chakras are balanced, your energy field is stronger and you'll cope better with stress and relate differently to situations and people,' she says. What happens in the class? The group sits in a circle and breathes slowly and deeply to induce relaxation. Shroff guides the class towards each chakra by asking them to picture themselves in a quiet place - such as a clearing in a forest - and visualise a particular chakra and how it relates to that vision. For example, when she arrives at the root chakra, people are asked to picture that chakra (bottom of the spinal cord) reaching to the ground and connecting them to the earth. These visions continue throughout each chakra - from the root to the navel, the solar plexus, the heart, throat, brow and up to the crown chakra. As each chakra is reached, the body begins to feel more weightless and less burdened. It's not unlike the feeling when the body starts to fall into a deep sleep. How do you feel afterwards? Relaxed and calm. In fact, better than after a massage, primarily because the mind is so focused on achieving that state, which influences the body. Sounds a bit touchy-feely: There's nothing unusual about meditation. Using breath and focused thought, it simply helps a person achieve peace of mind. Who is Dilshad Shroff? She's a psycho-spiritual therapist originally from India. She conducts workshops in personal effectiveness, which consists of changing attitudes and beliefs, achieving goals, building rapport and communication skills. She uses flower essences, colour therapy, chakra therapy, yoga and prayer to help clients. How can she tell what's wrong with my chakras? Shroff gives private consultations to explain how they function. She can then teach you meditations to help open and close them. How much is a meditation class? A one-hour session is $120. Is it worth the money? For someone who has trouble relaxing, or can't let go of negative thoughts, this is an ideal way to calm the mind. Shroff can be contacted through the New Age Shop on 2810 8694
