The sole surviving son of late Taiwanese president Chiang Ching-kuo will leave for the mainland next week to pay respects to his late mother - the first such trip to be made using the family name of Chiang.

John Chiang Hsiao-yen, who used to adopt his late mother's family name, Chang, will set off for Guilin in Guangxi on Monday.

He will sweep the tomb of his late mother, Chang Ya-jo, to observe the traditional Ching Ming Festival on Tuesday, when respects are paid to parents or ancestors.

'This is my first time to sweep my late mother's tomb after adopting the Chiang family name,' said Mr Chiang, formerly the foreign minister under the Kuomintang government and now a legislator.

He said he would also visit Xian and probably meet local government leaders there.

Mr Chiang said the Chiang clan on the mainland had already listed him as a member of the family.
