Whether you are in an upmarket restaurant or at a food stall, in Malaysia you are almost guaranteed a delicious meal. But when Malaysian recipes are exported, more often than not their quality declines sharply. Chefs in Hong Kong may import belachan (shrimp paste) or make sambal using the original recipe, but somehow it is just not the same. Having said that, it is possible to find good Malaysian food in this city at places such as the Banana Leaf Curry House and the relatively new Bamboo. Prices vary, mostly because you are likely to be charged more for imported beef or beautiful tableware. But at the end of the day, Malaysian cuisine in Hong Kong is straightforward, unpretentious and tasty.
