What is it? The newest modern Shanghainese restaurant by the Epicurean Group (Peak Lookout, Agave, Le Parisien, Funky Fish and others).

What's its namesake? A street in the French concession of old Shanghai, which got its name from French commander-in-chief J.J.C. Joffre.

Who goes there? Shoppers in Causeway Bay who want to get away from the crowds.

What's on the menu? Double-boiled duck with ham ($220), braised pork belly with Calvados ($88 - left), sauteed river shrimp with bi luo chun tea leaves ($168), spicy chrysanthemum stalks ($48), marinated pigeon with rice wine and dried plums ($128) and deep-fried shrimp and egg yolk dumplings ($32).

What else? Avenue Joffre has several private rooms that can seat up to 16. The Epicurean Group  has two other updated Shanghainese restaurants: Ming Ya Fe in Langham Place, Mongkok (tel: 2782 2200); and Ya Fe in Tsuen Wan (tel: 2411 1900).
