Kris Lopez

Saturday, 11pm

One-fifth, 9 Star St, Wan Chai

He may be only 21, but Kris Lopez has managed to achieve more than many DJs with years of experience behind the decks.

The young Briton has taken his brand of uplifting, soulful house from New York to Malta, Thailand and Russia, and has topped the bill at most of Britain's A-list clubs.

Lopez took to the decks at the age of 11, borrowing records from his father's disco and soul collection, and these sounds continue to be one of his main sources of inspiration.

By 15 he was using fake IDs to get past doormen and spin in London clubs, and became a regular fixture on the wave of pirate dance music radio stations that exploded across Britain in the 1990s.

The country's short-lived garage scene gave Lopez his greatest exposure and by 17 he was involved in promoting two top 40 UK hits for close friends the Genius Cru, while warming up for them playing funky/Latin house.

But Lopez is not just a DJ: after starting his own label, 2 Beautiful, he was signed by respected dance music stable Defected as part of the duo Splash, who have earned respect with releases such as Night By Night and Higher Thinking.

It sounds like a charmed life for a 21 year old, but Lopez says none of this happened by chance. 'I still believe to this day that you make your own luck,' he told Garage. music.com. 'From meeting one person, you meet another, and as long as you're business-minded, and start to network, then anything is possible.

'Trust me when I say I have had to go on missions to meet promoters - even doing early-hour sets in the morning on pirate radio stations across the other side of London just to push my name at a young age.'

Lopez is the latest artist signed to Defected to perform in Hong Kong - after recent appearances by Sandy Rivera, Blaze and DJ Gregory - and, if the momentum continues, the city is in for a long, hot summer of delicious house.
