Leading trainer Tony Cruz broke the 70-win barrier at Happy Valley last night, teaming with an unusual partner in apprentice Terry Wong Chi-wai to win the final event and set sail towards Hong Kong's all-time training record.

'Seventy wins is a new benchmark for me. I hope I can do it again,' said Cruz after Wong gave a textbook display on California Bishop to land the last in a performance that had the horse's trainer smiling widely.

Wong bounced California Bishop out and took the box seat behind leader Victory Marble to the home turn, then hooked off the old chestnut's heels to give chase.

'I guess in this world some things are just meant to be,' said Cruz. 'I wanted to book Jacky Tong for the horse but he already had a ride so I decided to get this boy.

'And from that moment, everything went just perfectly. He drew well, he got the perfect run behind a nice steady lead and he was out when he wanted to be.'
