BRITISH MATHEMATICIAN and philosopher Bertrand Russell once said: 'Education is the chief obstacle to intelligence and freedom of thought.'
Winston Chow, senior information technology administrator at the Hong Kong Baptist University may disagree. Since enrolling in his first tertiary computer programme in 1984, Mr Chow has continued to sign up for professional development programmes.
Keen to build on his first qualification, Mr Chow enrolled at the Hong Kong Technical Institute between 1987 and 1989 where he obtained a diploma in computer studies. This was followed by studying for a higher diploma in computer studies at the City University.
'In today's complex work environment, jobs usually require integrated, comprehensive and involved concepts that have to be learned from multidisciplines,' said Mr Chow, who completed his master's degree in information technology, graduating with a major in management at Glasgow University in Scotland. When Mr Chow returned to Hong Kong, he briefly worked for telecommunications company New TNT before joining Baptist University.
As senior information technology administrator, Mr Chow is responsible for developing support and application programmes for the Baptist University School of Continuing Education (SCE). Depending on the complexity of the programme, it can take anything from one week to a year to finish a project.
He also manages the various projects carried out by seven people who work in the same department
'In the fast-moving world of IT, where changes are not only rapid but also diverse, it is important to be aware of developments that help you expand your knowledge and work more efficiently,' Mr Chow said.
