Tech rebels seeking to have DVD Forum endorse their upstart FVD technology in race to become next-generation standard

Call them Taiwanese tech rebels - with the industry abuzz about the fierce competition between Blu-ray and High-Definition DVD, the Japanese-backed technologies that promise to make DVD obsolete, along comes a gang of 30 Taiwanese companies to crash the party.

The Taiwanese offering, called Forward Versatile Disc (FVD), is cheaper, more simple and more compatible with existing technologies than either of the new offerings. The technology is to be put to the DVD Forum today in a bid to have FVD endorsed by the organisation that administers DVD standards.

At stake is whether this upstart technology will get a foothold in the multibillion-dollar home entertainment industry and, in so doing, beat Blu-ray and HD-DVD in the race to become the next-generation standard.

HD-DVD is officially backed by the DVD Forum while Blu-ray has large firms such as Sony, Philips and Pioneer behind it.

It is a little-known fact that about 30 per cent of the wholesale price of a DVD disc, and as much as US$15 for every player, goes to the DVD technology rights holders. Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are looking to replicate that lucrative business model. With no royalties now being charged, FVD poses a threat to that income stream.
