Eight hundred children at a Hong Kong school received a special lesson yesterday about Japanese wartime atrocities in China.
The pupils of C.C.C. Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School in Tuen Mun were shown footage of Japanese troops executing people in Nanjing during the Nanking massacre of 1937.
The school also sent a dozen representatives to present a petition to the Japanese consulate.
'It is not right to change their history books and hide the truth from the young people,' said Form Six student Tang Wai-lok.
However, he said he and his friends were not keen on boycotting Japanese goods, which have become part of everyday life in Hong Kong.
Vice-principal Chan Yuen-sum said: 'We have to express our feelings in a peaceful way. For example, we can join in peaceful protests or write something to the Japanese government.'
